New flooring materials have completely changed the modern flooring industry. They offer homeowners, contractors, designers, and distributors far more choices than ever before. At the same time, all of these new names—PVC Flooring, LVT Flooring, SPC Flooring—can easily confuse buyers during the selection process.
To many consumers, these products look similar, sound similar, and are sometimes even displayed together in the same showroom. In reality, however, they are quite different in structure, performance, installation methods, and application scenarios. Even some flooring salespeople struggle to clearly explain the differences between them.
So what exactly separates PVC flooring, LVT flooring, and SPC flooring? Understanding these materials is important if you want to choose the right flooring solution for your project, home, or business.
To fully understand LVT and SPC flooring, it is necessary to first understand PVC flooring, because both LVT and SPC are actually developed from the PVC flooring category.
PVC flooring refers to flooring products manufactured primarily from polyvinyl chloride materials. In technical terms, PVC flooring is produced using PVC resin combined with additives such as stabilizers, fillers, plasticizers, and pigments through coating, extrusion, rolling, or pressing processes. According to Chinese national flooring standards (GB/T11982-2015), PVC flooring belongs to the category of lightweight resilient flooring materials.
PVC flooring first became popular in Europe, North America, Japan, and South Korea decades ago before gradually entering the Chinese market in the 1980s. Today, it is widely recognized around the world as a practical and economical flooring solution.
From a broad industry perspective, any flooring made primarily from PVC materials can technically be called PVC flooring. This means LVT flooring and SPC flooring also belong to the larger PVC flooring family. However, as flooring technologies evolved, these newer categories became increasingly independent and developed into their own product types.
In today’s market, when people refer to traditional “PVC flooring,” they usually mean flexible PVC sheet flooring, sometimes called vinyl sheet flooring. This type of flooring is made mainly from PVC resin without large amounts of calcium carbonate powder. Because it is very flexible and thin—typically around 2mm thick—it is considered a soft flooring material.
PVC sheet flooring does have some advantages. It is affordable, relatively easy to install, waterproof, and does not contain formaldehyde like some traditional wood flooring products. However, due to its thin structure, the walking experience is usually not very comfortable. Any unevenness in the subfloor can easily become visible or noticeable underfoot.
For this reason, traditional PVC flooring is commonly used in low-budget rental properties, temporary renovations, fast-food restaurants, and other commercial spaces where cost is prioritized over long-term performance or luxury appearance.
LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile. Compared with traditional PVC sheet flooring, LVT flooring represented a major upgrade in both appearance and performance when it first entered the market.
LVT flooring is a semi-rigid resilient flooring product made primarily from PVC materials combined with a smaller amount of calcium carbonate powder. One of its defining characteristics is flexibility. Some LVT flooring products are soft enough to bend significantly and can even be rolled during transportation or installation.
Although SPC flooring has become extremely popular in recent years, LVT flooring is still widely used throughout North America, South America, Africa, and many European markets because of its versatility and wide range of installation systems.
Today, LVT flooring is generally divided into four main product types:
Each type is designed for different installation requirements and project conditions. Dry back LVT is commonly used in commercial projects where glue-down installation provides strong stability. Click lock LVT offers easier installation for residential projects. Loose lay flooring is popular for temporary or fast renovation projects, while peel-and-stick LVT is often chosen for quick DIY installations.
LVT flooring became extremely popular because it combines attractive visual designs with practical functionality. It offers realistic wood textures, stone appearances, and decorative patterns at a much lower cost than natural materials. Retail prices can vary significantly depending on specifications, brand positioning, and wear layer thickness.
One of the biggest advantages of LVT flooring is comfort. Compared with harder flooring materials, LVT provides a softer walking experience with better elasticity and impact resistance. It is also waterproof, flame-retardant, easy to maintain, and environmentally friendly. Because of these features, LVT flooring is commonly installed in schools, kindergartens, children’s playrooms, offices, rental apartments, and various commercial environments.
However, compared with modern SPC flooring, LVT also has some limitations. Since most LVT flooring products are thinner and softer, usually below 5mm thickness, they may experience expansion or movement in large installation areas. Their heat resistance, dimensional stability, and weather adaptability are generally not as strong as SPC flooring, especially in regions with significant temperature fluctuations.
In addition, many LVT flooring installations require very smooth and level subfloors. Professional installation is often necessary, which can increase overall project costs.
SPC flooring, short for Stone Plastic Composite flooring, has become one of the most widely recognized flooring categories in today’s global flooring industry.
Unlike traditional PVC sheet flooring or flexible LVT flooring, SPC flooring belongs to the rigid core flooring category. Its main raw materials are PVC resin and calcium carbonate powder, which are combined through high-temperature extrusion technology to create an extremely stable and durable core structure.
SPC flooring is sometimes called stone crystal flooring or stone polymer flooring in different international markets. Besides North America and Europe, Southeast Asia has also become one of the fastest-growing markets for SPC flooring because of its strong moisture resistance and suitability for humid climates.
One of the biggest advantages of SPC flooring is that it combines modern appearance with excellent practical performance. SPC flooring is manufactured through a hot-melt extrusion process that does not require glue during core production. Standard thickness usually ranges from 4mm to 6mm, providing strong compression resistance, impact resistance, and load-bearing performance.
Compared with LVT flooring, SPC flooring is significantly more stable. It performs extremely well in environments with humidity changes, temperature fluctuations, and heavy daily traffic.
SPC flooring offers many advantages, including:
Because of these characteristics, SPC flooring can be installed in a much wider range of environments compared with traditional flooring materials. It is compatible with underfloor heating systems, performs well in rainy or humid regions, and is suitable for both residential and commercial projects.
Today, SPC flooring is widely considered the mainstream choice among modern resilient flooring products. It combines stability, attractive design options, waterproof performance, and easy installation into one highly practical flooring solution.
When compared with traditional wood flooring or laminate flooring, PVC, LVT, and SPC flooring products offer one major advantage: complete waterproof performance.
Traditional wood flooring products require adhesives and wood-based materials, which means formaldehyde emissions can still exist even when products meet E0 environmental standards. For consumers who want truly formaldehyde-free flooring solutions, SPC flooring is often considered a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative.
Water resistance is another major difference. No wood flooring product can be completely waterproof. Some engineered wood flooring products advertise improved moisture resistance, but wood materials will always react to humidity and water exposure to some extent. Over time, moisture can still cause swelling, deformation, discoloration, or even decay.
For homes located on ground floors, in coastal regions, or in humid environments, SPC flooring often provides a far more reliable long-term solution. It combines the appearance of natural wood with the durability and waterproof performance required for modern living conditions.
That is why more homeowners, builders, distributors, and commercial project contractors around the world are increasingly choosing SPC flooring as their preferred flooring solution for both residential and commercial applications.
When comparing modern flooring materials, many people naturally compare SPC flooring with ceramic tiles. The reason is simple: SPC flooring belongs to the rigid flooring category, which means its structural strength, durability, and pricing are much closer to ceramic tile than traditional soft vinyl flooring products.
Although both materials are widely used in residential and commercial spaces, SPC flooring offers several important advantages that have made it increasingly popular around the world.
One of the biggest advantages of SPC flooring is its anti-slip performance. Ceramic tiles can become extremely slippery when exposed to water, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, entrances, and other wet areas. SPC flooring, on the other hand, provides much better slip resistance even under humid or wet conditions, making daily walking safer and more comfortable. In fact, many flooring-related household injuries each year are caused by slippery tile surfaces.
Installation is another major difference between the two materials. Ceramic tile installation requires professional labor, cement mortar, adhesives, leveling work, and a relatively complicated construction process. The installation itself can be time-consuming and expensive, especially for large projects.
SPC flooring uses a click-lock installation system, which greatly simplifies the installation process. As long as the subfloor is reasonably flat, SPC flooring can often be installed without complicated supporting materials. This reduces both installation time and labor costs while making future renovation projects much easier.
Maintenance and repair also favor SPC flooring. If a ceramic tile cracks or becomes damaged, repairing it can be extremely difficult. Because ceramic tiles often have color variations between production batches, replacing a single damaged tile rarely results in a perfect color match unless the replacement tile comes from the exact same batch. In many cases, replacing damaged tiles also risks damaging surrounding tiles during removal.
SPC flooring is much easier to replace because of its click-lock structure. Individual planks can usually be removed and replaced without major demolition work. Under normal household use, SPC flooring is highly durable and resistant to daily wear. Unless it is intentionally damaged by sharp heavy objects, severe scratching, or extreme impact, long-term problems are relatively uncommon.
Design flexibility is another area where SPC flooring has a clear advantage. SPC flooring is available in a huge variety of wood textures, stone looks, carpet patterns, modern decorative finishes, and custom colors. This gives homeowners, designers, and project contractors much more freedom when creating interior design styles and color combinations. Compared with ceramic tiles, SPC flooring provides a much broader range of decorative possibilities for modern interior spaces.
There is an old saying: “Know both yourself and your options, and you can make the best decision.” Flooring selection works the same way. Only by understanding the differences, strengths, and limitations of each flooring material can buyers choose the product that truly fits their project requirements and long-term expectations.
