What People Like About SPC
- Water resistance and durability are common praises. “The new generation SPCs and WPCs are a great long-lasting, great-looking option for most people’s busy homes.”
- Many owners report long-term satisfaction when installed properly. “I’m happy with my floor 8 years post-install. HS Flooring SPC. All depends on the quality of install and floor prep.”
- Easier to maintain and kid-proof compared with some alternatives. “Doesn’t stain due to spills and is easier to clean”
Common Problems Reported
- Poor-quality product or cheap installs cause most failures. “People were going for the cheapest floors possible, and companies raced to the bottom to hit that need.”
- Failures often trace back to subfloor issues or missing vapor barrier. “If it is [on slab], it was probably installed without a vapor barrier.”
- Seams and edges can let water in; they aren’t sealed as well as sheet vinyl. “It’s only waterproof from the top. And if water gets underneath, your only recourse is to rip the whole floor up.”
Installation Tips HS Flooring Recommends
- Prep the subfloor properly; level and remove deflection. “Leveling is the biggest factor in floating floor installs performing properly.”
- Use thicker, higher-quality SPC (and check wear layer). “I’m a big fan of a 20 mil wear layer and +8mm thickness. 6.5mm is a bit thin but should be okay.”
- On concrete slabs, add a 6 mil poly vapor barrier under the floor. In certain special operating environments, “SPCs are notorious for failure without a 6 mil vapor barrier underneath.”
When To Consider Alternatives
- If you want a softer, quieter feel, consider WPC or thicker options. WPC provides a quieter, softer feel underfoot while retaining many of the practical benefits associated with SPC flooring.
- Premium laminate is also worth considering, especially for residential applications, where we continue to see healthy demand. We don’t manufacture laminate ourselves, but several of our customers ask us to source it for them alongside their SPC and LVT orders. In many cases, our existing relationships with the factories allow us to secure better pricing than they could obtain by purchasing separately, while also making quality control and after-sales communication much easier. So far, the premium laminate products we have sourced for our customers have not resulted in any warranty claims or quality-related complaints.”
- For wet rooms or full waterproof seams, sheet vinyl avoids seams entirely. “Sheet vinyl is much safer because there are no seams at all, and you don’t have to worry about one or two tiles/planks not attached correctly.”
HS Flooring experiences show SPC can be a solid, low-maintenance choice when the product quality is good and the installer properly preps and protects the subfloor (especially on concrete). Cheap boards or rushed installs are the usual sources of problems, so prioritize thicker wear layers, a trusted brand/installer, and a vapor barrier on slabs.
Proper SPC flooring installation requires meticulous subfloor preparation and strict adherence to manufacturer guidelines to prevent common issues like lifting and broken locking mechanisms.
Subfloor Preparation is Crucial
- Ensure the subfloor is dead flat. “That stuff fails in no time unless the surface is dead flat before installation.”
- Level any unevenness in the subfloor. “Leveling is the biggest factor in floating floor installs performing properly.”
- Grind high spots and fill low spots. “Grind the high and fill the lows, easier said than done if they’re slow gradual rolls/bowls but those won’t hurt you much.”
Adhering to Manufacturer Guidelines
- Always use a vapor barrier over concrete slabs. “If it is [on slab], it was probably installed without a vapor barrier.”
- Avoid installing cabinets directly on top of SPC flooring. “It will fail if you install cabinets over SPC.”
- Leave an expansion gap around the perimeter and fixed objects. “It does expand and contract like any other floating floor.”
Quality of Materials and Execution
- Choose thicker SPC with a good wear layer. “I still sell a lot of SPC, but I basically only really show stuff that is 6mm or more.”
- Ensure installers understand SPC specifics, especially with underfloor heating. “He hasn’t worked with this type of flooring before though.”
- Do not use office chair wheels directly on SPC. “Once laid, don’t use office chair wheels. They will break the joints.”
There are countless people who are happy with their SPC floors. It mostly comes down to floor prep, but the problem is that there is a lot of crap out there, and it’s hard for customers to know the difference between good stuff and absolute garbage. Couple that with poor installation techniques, and you get a lot of issues. Good SPC installed properly will last you a very long time.
